Eagle?: Golden/WTSE or is it a Buzzard?
This bird seen from the A93 (Just north of Blairgowrie) on 19th April 2009. Looked to be eagle-sized and did not appear to fly like a buzzard. Can you help?
I'm not convinced it's a Golden Eagle, wing shape doesn't look right nor do the white patches on the wings (looks more like a Buzzard pattern), the way it's hanging it's legs down in the air is also more typical of Buzzard, will photoshop it later and see if I can pick out any more detail. The bottom two images are Raven.
After close study I'm certain it's a Buzzard, if you lighten up the underwing you can see the broad whitish band on the underwing typical of Buzzard, the wing tips are also showing typical 5 fingered primaries of Buzzard, Golden Eagle show 7 and fingers are longer more obvious on Goldie's.
It is easier to tell you, who I am not. I am not an expert ologist of any kind (I did manage to get a grade C in O'level Biology but other than that, I have had no formal training in this field). I claim no credentials other than my own experiences and limitless enthusiasm. I have always been fascinated by all areas of natural history and together with my love of photography I am now in a position to bring these two fields together.
I have set myself the quest of photographing as many British species of wildlife as possible and you can check out my progress at:

It's a Golden Eagle, You can identify it by it's white wing patches on the primary feathers
ReplyDeleteIt certainly lookled like an eagle - just the way it held its wings and, as I said, it just looked too big for a buzzard.

Thanks for these comments John - I very much appreciate your input.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the Raven.
